My Journey

I’m Kangainathan, known to my community as Kangai. My life’s journey with music began in India during the 1990s. I was introduced to music by my first teacher, Velur Theva, who taught me the guitar, and I quickly became captivated. Soon, I began studying Western music on the keyboard under Arcat Mani in Arcatu, and my love for music deepened as I continued to explore new sounds and techniques.

In T. Nagar, Chennai, I pursued both instruments further and had the privilege of learning from Booch, a talented trumpet player and guitarist who worked with the legendary music director Ilayaraja. Over time, I began teaching myself, spending nearly five years in Valasaravakkam, Chennai, refining my skills. My passion for music soon led me to share it with others, and I became a music teacher, dedicated to enriching both children and adults with the gift of music. Today, I teach a variety of instruments, including keyboard and drums, with the goal of inspiring students and instilling a lifelong love for music.

Fueled by this passion, I also formed my own band, Priya Rhythms, and we performed across Chennai and Tamil Nadu. One memorable event was our 1998 student program in Chennai, where we were honored by the presence of music director Chandrabose as our chief guest.

After moving to London in 2004, I embraced a new beginning. I launched Priyaraagankal, an international music competition that remains a cherished annual event, giving aspiring musicians a platform to showcase their talents. For nearly a decade, I also served as a representative for the Trinity College of Music’s exam center in Stanmore (44969), helping students pursue formal music education.

Alongside my teaching and community work, I’ve composed over 60 Tamil songs and scored the full soundtrack for the Tamil film Iru Ullankal in 2004. Each year, I continue to organize music competitions and performances. Music is my heartbeat, embedded in every cell of my body, and sharing it with others brings me endless fulfillment.
